Staff and students at Presentation Secondary Schoo, Sexton Street are celebrating after the school enjoyed double success at the recent ECO UNESCO Young Environmentalist Awards

Teacher, Helen Aherne, received the accolade of best Eco Leader at the awards ceremony which was hosted at the Mansion House in Dublin,

Over the past year, Helen has led students with projects such as erecting and maintaining a Poly-tunnel on the grounds of the school, giving the school rockery a new lease of life and helping to ensure the school became one of the first in the country to compost school lunches.

Helen has also worked to improve the local environment by arranging a Community Action Day where students were involved in a cleanup for residents of St Saviour’s Parish, Carey’s Road.

Buoyed by the success of her ‘Green Army’ Helen Aherne says she is aleady busy planning a range of activities for the next school year.

Meanwhile, a group of Transition Year students from the school received an award for the ‘most creative display’ in the ‘Art and Design’ category.

As part of their entry, the students created a range of outfits from recycled materials.

The materials included bicycle tubes, paper and bottle tops and centred on themes including ‘Black Swan’, ‘Goddess of the Jungle’ and ‘Barbie’.

The competition process involved modelling the different outfits and describing the inspiration for the designs and their method of production.

The success in Young Environmentalist Awards comes shortly after the student fashionistas competed at this year’s ‘Junk Kouture Recycled Fashion Competition’ where one entry entitled ‘Voltage’ secured a place in the national finals.

One of the students, Lynda Slattery, modelled the entry and proved to be a true professional.
