Plans for Moyross horse project played down

plans for an equestrian centre in the regeneration areas are unlikely to happen, according to city councillor John Gilligan.
This comes despite a call from a Moyross activist for such a scheme, which he says play a vital role in preventing children being lured into gangs and criminality.
Dean Quinn, Sarsfield Gardens, says there is an urgency in Moyross for a project of this sort.
“The kids need something. The last time we raised this, we heard nothing back. I just want someone to speak up on it. Any pleas we have made have fallen on deaf ears. We feel councillors have no interest in Moyross: they come around here looking for your votes, and this is the only time they knock at your door,” he said.
The problem of horses roaming in the city has been a problem for years. The City Council’s bye-laws almost always preclude horse owners from allowing their horse to graze. Instead, many allow their horses to graze illegally, or leave them at the county boundary where the bye-laws are more lenient.
The issue was raised four years ago when plans were unveiled for a scheme on Department of Defence owned lands in Knockalisheen. But these never came to fruition, despite the fact local TD Willie O’Dea was Defence Minister at the time.
City east councillor Gilligan, chairman of the environment committee, said he attempted to get a horse project over the line a year ago. But due to the fact only he and Kevin Kiely were willing to support the scheme, it failed to progress, he added.
“I brought it to council 12 months ago, but only two out of 17 people supported the idea of granting licences for this. The rest of the council were against it,” he said.
