Pat Garrett goin’ up the country in aid of Samaritans

Walk the line: Supporting the Samaritans charity walk

Walk the line: Supporting the Samaritans charity walk

COUNTRY music DJ Pat Butler and family will be wearing out their walking shoes next week to raise money for the Samaritans.

The Clareview man, who presents a daily show on his online radio station as Pat Garrett, is going up the country as he foots it over 60 miles from Limerick to Galway over three days.

He will be joined by his wife Caroline and three sons - Mark, Garrett and Luke. And Pat’s mother, 75-year-old Rita Butler Ryan, intends making it three generations of the family for at least one stretch.

The Butlers are being supported in their efforts by DJs and listeners from www.irishcountrymusicradio.com, the on-line station which enjoys a huge listenership with ex-patriates scattered around the world.

“We specialise in country and Irish music and would have DJs from all over the world that keep us going 24-7. We have DJs in Australia, Newfoundland, in the UK, in Northern Ireland and down here as well. Our main listenership is in the UK but we would have people tuning in from all over, from as far away as South Africa and the Czech Republic only today,” said Pat.

He hopes that which such an audience, donations can be made online to support the Samaritans.

“The Samaritans have such a big service to run which is very valuable but doesn’t get the support it deserves. We hope our small effort will not only help them financially but help them raise awareness,” said Pat.

Pat, who coaches schoolboys for Parkville FC, has also won a lot of support from the soccer community in Limerick, Clare and Galway.

A charity single - “Salute to Ireland” - penned by Pat is available to download on the station website. Setting off from the Samaritans on Barrington Street on Monday, August 27 at 9.30am, Mayor Gerry McLoughlin will greet the walkers at City Hall at 10am before they hit the road to Galway. Contact charitywalk@irishcountrymusicradio.com or 087 1317856 to make a donation or find out more.
