O’Malley clan from across the globe to descend on Limerick village

THE O’MALLEYS from Murroe have made their surname known throughout the world.
Now descendants from home and abroad are invited back to the East Limerick village for a gathering of O’Malleys on St Patrick’s night.
The event organised by Murroe Community Council forms part of the parish’s Week of Welcomes and annual Expo commencing on March 8.
The O’Malley Gathering stemmed from a family tree started four years ago.
There are around 2,000 names in total, said Denis O’Malley, one of the 15 strong Gathering committee.
“All O’Malleys descended from the Murroe O’Malleys, their families, relations and connections are invited to Crokers pub in Murroe on March 17.
“Up to 200 people are expected, and already committed to being there are some well known figures,” said Denis.
From the Irish and American world of politics there will be Des and Tim O’Malley, and Ed O’Malley, a former state legislator in Kansas city, Missouri.
Fittingly rugby greats, John and Tom Hayes, will join another - Peter Clohessy - as he owns Crokers.
The Hayes brothers’ mother, Marie, is an O’Malley.
From the official O’Malley family clan there will be Don O’Malley, Castletroy, a former clan chieftain, as well as Kitty O’Malley Harlow, Westport - former clan chieftain. Margaret O’Malley Davern, is the current tanaiste and chieftain in waiting.
Canon Donough O’Malley, of St Mary’s parish, will be another familiar face on the night.
The Gathering committee, headed up by Ted O’Malley, issued invites on the Gathering Ireland and Ireland Reaching Out websites, and their Facebook page.
“Already we have received commitments from families in the UK, USA, New Zealand and Australia. Of course we also have families coming from various corners of Ireland.
“Family trees will be unveiled on March 17 showing extended details that have been gathered over the last number of years. There is also keen interest to locate old photographs of O’Malley ancestors to present on the night in conjunction with the family trees,” said Denis.
In the run up to March 17 there will be genealogy workshops.
Their research has been so thorough that they came across a rural school in Central Otago, New Zealand.
In the late 1800s a James O’Malley emigrated. The committee found that a few years ago in the small school of 32 pupils, 18 were O’Malleys.
The Week of Welcomes in Murroe commences on Friday, March 8.
