LIMERICK may have many monikers, but one group of people is trying to attach a very different status to the city.

Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Gerry McLoughlin, has congratulated students from Mary Immaculate College on receiving an award for civic contribution and their ongoing work on Fairtrade.

The One World Society at the college won the national award for civic contribution at the Board of Irish College Society Awards earlier this year, and the students were welcomed to the Mayor’s office to hear of their progress in making Limerick a Fairtrade city. “The society works tirelessly to promote Fairtrade and to support people in developing countries to support themselves,” said the mayor.

The One World Society has been one of the leading societies in Mary Immaculate College for a number of years, and aims to help causes in developing countries. Students Laurence Considine, Paul McNamara, Bríd Larkin and Laura Griffin, were the sole Irish representatives at the “People and Planet Summer Gathering” in Oxford where they made a presentation on behalf of Fairtrade Ireland. They outlined the work done by them not only on a regional level but also on a national level to promote Fairtrade products.
