Mayor launches Limerick Mental Health Week

Limerick Mental Health Week was officially launched on Monday, in City Hall by Mayor Gerry McLoughlin and the Limerick Mental Health Association as part of the World Mental Health day on October 10.
Mayor McLoughlin said that he was delighted to launch the event, adding that Limerick Mental Health Week is about “breaking down barriers and highlighting any stigma attached to mental health”.
Chief executive of Mental Health Ireland Brian Howard also praised the work of all Limerick mental health projects saying: “I think that the Limerick Mental Health Association and other local mental health campaigns in the Limerick area have been at the forefront of this very important subject for many years.
“People were very reluctant to talk about mental health as there might have been a stigma attached to it but through successful days and events like these we want to continue to raise the profile of mental health awareness,” he added.
Marie Breen of the Limerick Mental Health Association also urged as many people to get involved with the week long events as possible.
“The more information and dialogue that we can get going on mental health, the less of a stigma attached to it. We want people to realise that integration has a huge part to play in everyone’s mental health so talking to each other about it is the first step,” she said.
To mark World Mental Health day, Limerick Mental Health Association have planned a host of events running from October 6 to 14 which will kick off on Saturday, October 6 with a children’s art event at the Crescent Shopping Centre, Dooradoyle. Also included throughout the week is a talk on October 9 in Mary Immaculate College on stress management and a free concert in St John’s Cathedral by Limerick Choral Union on Friday, October 12 at 7.30pm.
Other events include Laughter Yoga, Tai- Chi, Coillte Healthy Woodland Walks in Cratloe Woods, a talk titled Mindful Men at the County Library, Dooradoyle on October 11, poetry at the White House Bar and ‘Bark in the Park-Two Steps Forward, Four Paws Support’ on Sunday, October 14 in the People’s Park.
