Stop bullying: St Munchins College students with principal David Quilter during anti-bullying week at the school

Students in a Limerick city school have united in a stand against bullying.

An anti bullying week with the slogan Reject – React – Report was launched this Monday in St Munchin’s College to say ‘No to bullies’.

The purpose of the week is to raise awareness of the issues surrounding bullying and to help create a culture amongst students to become intolerant of bullying, according to its organisers.

There are a number of activities and events organised to include all students and staff at the school. Slogan and poster competitions, creative writing competitions and a statistical analysis of the issue of bullying will be taking place throughout the week in the school.

Currently tutors meet their individual classes every morning to check up on the wellbeing of their students.

The school has developed a short programme on bullying to be delivered by each tutor to their group at this time.

School principal David Quilter said: “At the start of this year the staff of the school decided to prioritise the issue of bullying and since September they have been working hard developing strategies to combat and prevent bullying.

“Anti bullying week aims to raise awareness amongst all in our school, not just students, of this issue.”

Addressing students at assembly on Friday morning, Brian O’Donoghue, deputy principal said: “Bullying has no place in society nor does it have a place in our school. We all need to work together and we want our students to report anything that they consider to be bullying.”

Mr O’Donoghue added: “This is not always easy. It has been said that leaders do the right thing. Reporting bullying is the right thing and as such we call on all students to be leaders.”

Richard Lynch, founder of ilovelimerick.com, has produced a video to combat cyber bulllying. ‘End to Cyber Bullying’ can be found on Richard’s Youtube channel.
