A TRAINEE teacher has swapped North East Germany for North East Limerick.

Since arriving in Doon CBS Primary School on an Erasmus scholarship, Jennifer Mörtzsch, has made a big impression.

School principal, Br James Dormer, says Jennifer has taught the boys some German and they have taught her some Irish.

“Irish is really difficult!” laughs Jennifer, who is from Rostock.

She chose the Doon school because she liked their website and Br Dormer replied to her request for teaching experience promptly.

“I study special education needs in Germany. I like to be in other countries and learn about them.

“I had never visited Ireland before. I was very interested in Irish culture, the people and does it rain all the time or not?!” joked Jennifer.

The answer to the last question is a certain yes, but she has found the people and Doon much more to her liking.

“Everybody in the school is very nice. It is very friendly, they are very helpful at all times, I love it here,” said Jennifer, who has helped the boys in Doon get a headstart on classmates when they go to secondary school as she has taught them some basic German.

She also teaches art and has organised a trip for third and fourth class to the Hunt Museum next week.

Jennifer says she will be sad to leave when her three months are up, and so too will all in Doon CBS.

Br Dormer says Jennifer has been a huge addition to the school.

“It’s brought a different culture into the school and she is an excellent teacher,” said Br Dormer.
