Salesian National School on the North Circular Road recently held an interactive evening with a difference when they welcomed over 150 parents to take part in six creative demonstrations led by students and teachers at the school.

“We wanted to give parents a flavour of what goes on in the school so we set up six demonstrations ranging from music, maths, science, and gymnastics. We wanted to host an AGM with a difference and we were very happy with the result. All the parents said they were very impressed,” said Salesians National School principal Sr. Baker.

Students and staff at Salesians were also celebrating after raising almost €3,000 for Mission Week which will help a range of charities, including the Salesians of South Africa.

“Students baked cakes and buns which were then sold to the rest of the school during break. We also had a live bingo which ran from the school blog and was very successful,” added principal Baker.

The primary school which now carries a staff of 14 and 200 students first opened in 1947.

“All the kids in the school are extremely creative and we try to encourage that by hosting a range of after school and in school activities including speech and drama, tin whistle lessons, basketball and choir,” she explained.

Other facilities on offer in the school include computer classes, a mobile library, homework club, and a new initiative called Joy Club for new students.

“The second class students are new to the school so this project is a way for them to make friends and help them adjust to a different surrounding,” she said.

The school have also begun a “reading tree” campaign to encourage reading amongst younger children, in turn helping them to develop a lifelong hobby.

“Students read the books and write their name on a paper leaf for the tree. Then at Christmas we will hold a raffle with a prize of a 12 book hamper pack for those who have taken part,” she added.
