Limerick receives prize for its Fairtrade work

Limerick had good reason to celebrate this week when it was announced that Limerick City had scooped the runner-up prize for best Town/City for their Fairtrade contribution for 2012.
This achievement also coincides with the city’s seventh birthday as a recognised Fairtrade city having received Fairtrade status in 2005.
The award is the third time that Limerick has been recognised for its contribution to Fairtrade having already scooped the most creative Fairtrade prize and Best Fairtrade Town award for 2011.
Praising the work Mayor Gerry McLoughlin said, “I am extremely proud of Limerick’s status as a Fairtrade City and great credit is due to the Fairtrade Committee for this achievement.”
While at the celebrations Mayor McLoughlin also presented over 15 primary and post primary students with awards for their Fairtrade Christmas Card designs.
Following hundreds of entries from schools throughout Limerick only three winners will have their cards reproduced and sent to a variety of Limerick businesses, shops and cafes who have supported the Fairtrade initiative in Limerick city and county.
First place winner in the primary school category Emily Walsh from Scoil an Spioraid Naoimh in Roxborough said that she was thrilled to have her card chosen as the winner.
“I’m delighted to win. I didn’t expect to be picked so it was a nice surprise when I heard I had won,” explains Emily from Ballyneety.
“We got to learn about Fairtrade in school so I think it was great to be a part of it,” she added.
