A SPECIAL climb of Croagh Patrick organised by two Limerick men this weekend is expected to raise at least €50,000 for local charities.

An estimated 800 people from across Limerick and further afield will take part in the climb this Sunday, September 30 which will benefit cystic fibrosis charity ‘TLC4CF’, and Irish Autism Action.

The event is being led by Adare men Liam Woulfe and Mike Aherne, who have worked tirelessly in recent months to ensure that the climb is a success.

Mr Aherne said that as of this week, a total of 570 people had signed up for the climb and had collected an average of €150 in sponsorship money each. He said that once friends, family and last-minute climbers are included, organisers expect as many as 800 people to take part this weekend.

“What we’re going to do is send around a text to all the 570 this week, just saying that if they want to bring up a few more with them they can. The sponsorship is going very well, a lot of the money has come back to us already and most of the cards are full.

“When we sent around the cards, we asked people to come up with €100. But some cards have €800, and the average is €150. We’re hoping to come away with €50,000.

“We’re splitting the money straight down the middle between the two charities. Nothing will be coming out to pay for costs or anything, 100% will be going to them.”

Mr Aherne said that many of the climbers are relative novices who will be taking on Croagh Patrick for the first time.

Mr Aherne paid tribute to everyone who has given their time and effort in organising the climb, and gave particular thanks to the Woodlands House Hotel in Adare for facilitating their regular meetings.

For more information on the climb or to enquire about donations, contact Liam on 087 2410606 or Mike at 086 3579232. Donations can be made payable to TLC4CF/IAA care of Liam Woulfe, Castlematrix House, Knockanes, Adare.
