THE Limerick city chief fire officer was one of six firefighters from Limerick who were honoured by the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government, for their long-service as firefighters.

Michael Ryan, John Denning (sub-officer) and Paul Knapp (firefighter), who have all served for 20 years with the Limerick City Fire and Rescue Service, were presented with medals and certificates to mark the milestone in their careers.

The County Limerick chief fire officer, Carmel Kirby was also honoured for her 20 years service as was Des Normoyle (station officer).

Edmond Dollery was also honoured for his 30 years service with the Limerick County Fire and Rescue Service.

Fire service personnel from across the country were honoured at the national Long Service awards ceremony, which took place at the Moran Red Cow Hotel in Dublin.

The awards were established two decades ago and according to Minister-of-State, Fergal O’Dowd, it is important to acknowledge being done by firefighters.

“The rationale behind these awards remains as valid as for their launch in 1992: it is the State’s way of honouring local authority fire service personnel for ‘being there’ over all the years, for being prepared to respond to calls for help, at all times, and in all weathers,” he said.

The minister said firefighters are coping with an ever more diverse and complex range of challenges.

“Your work as fire services personnel highlights personal qualities of courage, strength and empathy when giving assistance to people caught up in emergency incidents,” he said.
