Limerick City Council opens new estate in Garryowen

EIGHT new houses have been opened in an area which once housed a quarry in Garryowen.
Limerick City Council secured almost €1m funding to build a new mini-estate on Pike Avenue, Garryowen.
And City East councillor Kieran O’Hanlon was on hand to officially cut the ribbon at the development of eight three bedroomed terraced houses.
Addressing those gathered - including council officials, residents and Deputy Willie O’Dea, Cllr O’Hanlon said: “It is a wonderful development. There was a lot of concern with the other residents as to who was going in there. But everyone is delighted now: it is one happy community.”
He said he felt proud to be performing the opening of the estate, not least because his own father was born in the neighbourhood.
“I am particularly pleased to be doing the opening, because my own father was born across the road, so I knew a lot of the people from the area.” he said.
One concern Cllr O’Hanlon said he had was that some of the houses behind the new Pike Avenue development were damaged due to the presence of the old quarry.
“An injustice has been done because the council and the Department of the Environment sold these houses to people. There are now cracks in the houses: they are now damaged goods. I have made representations on this at City Hall, but got nowhere,” he said, calling on Housing Minister to act on behalf of these tenants.
“They put their life savings into these houses, they are damaged now,” he said.
Garryowen man John Lipper moved into one of the homes with his toddler son Ryan.
“It is a grand house. We grew up around the area, so it is nice. It is a perfect house. It is hard enough to get a house when you have children, so I am happy. It’s a lovely community,” he said.
The project cost €998,200 in total to complete.
