THE first baby of the new year was born just after midnight at the Mid Western Maternity Hospital in Limerick.
Baby Leo Maples weighed 6lbs 10.5oz when he arrived at 12.01am yesterday,
His parents Carmel McNamara and Charles Maples who live in West Clare said they were not expecting to see their new bundle of joy
until next week.
“I wasn’t due until next Tuesday but my waters broke at home at around 2.45pm so we came straight into Limerick and got to the hospital around 4.15pm,” explained Carmel.
Carmel, 30, who already has two daughters - Kelly, 9, and Aine, 17 months, - named her first son after her father Leo McNamara who passed away in January of last year.
A total of five babies were born at the Mid Western Regional Maternity Hospital in Limerick between midnight and 6am yesterday on New Year’s Day.
