'Inspirational: Award nominee Seamus Stack

A DROMCOLLOGHER man has been nominated for a national volunteer award for helping elderly people in the community.

Seamus Stack has been shortlisted in the community category in the Volunteer Ireland Awards for spearheading a 20-bed Respite Care Centre for the elderly since 2002.

He is among four people from Limerick to be shortlisted for an award, among 31 volunteers nationally shortlisted for the annual awards which celebrate and recognise volunteers across Ireland.

“His campaign for improved quality of life to the elderly, a vulnerable group in today’s world, is inspirational,” said those who nominated him.

“He leads by example and in doing so encourages the community to take ownership and build on what has already been established. No other small town in this county has responded more generously and comprehensively to the needs of elderly and disadvantaged spearheaded by Seamus.”

In the city, Jacqueline O’Driscoll, Sr. Helen Culhane, Sinead Carey have also been nominated in two other categories - animals and the environment category, and social work.

Jacqueline co-founded Limerick Feral Cats, turning her house into a sanctuary for stray cats and also provides outreach services for stray animals across the county.

Sr. Helen supports children aged four to 18 who have gone through a tragic time such as death, divorce or separation.

Sinead Carey has been coordinating the Novas Initiatives Street-Outreach since late 2009, which includes a soup run for homeless people in the city.

An overall winner and category winners in the Panadol supported initiative will be announced on Wednesday, December 5 at a gala event in Dublin hosted by RTE Presenter Claire Byrne.
