Civic Trust to tackle ‘one street a week’

Clean-up Limerick idea: Jennifer Gabbett

Clean-up Limerick idea: Jennifer Gabbett

Limerick Civic Trust is to begin a new programme of works in the city, under which they will tackle one street each week.

The programme named A Street A Week is the brainchild of the Civic Trust chairman, Jennifer Gabbett, and has been developed alongside director Dr. James Ring.

Items such as gum removal, weeding, power washing and the tackling of minor graffiti will be targeted. The Civic Trust will work hand in hand with the City Council to ensure the best possible results for the streets involved.

Before each street is targeted, all businesses in the area will be contacted, informed and asked for opinions regarding the work plan. In October four streets will be targeted, namely Nicholas Street, Denmark Street, Shannon Street and The Crescent.

“I have always felt that the Civic Trust should be more actively involved in the city centre and I was very keen to get this programme started during my term as chairman.

“This programme will actively improve the city centre and in essence goes back to the core ethos of the Civic Trust “improvement of our environment by positive action,” said Mrs Gabbett.

Dr. Ring said it is hoped that this effort will really make “a meaningful long term difference to the streetscape of Limerick.

“There is only so much that the Council can be expected to do, the Civic Trust will work closely with all stakeholders to ensure we leave behind a street in pristine condition.”

He said he’s delighted with the results in the Tidy Towns competition, adding “it is great to see so many groups and communities rolling up their sleeves and tackling these issues.

“The Civic Trust has been doing this for almost 30 years, I hope this initiative will help drive the results for next year even higher”.
