The Christian Aid ‘Tax Justice’ bus tour visited Limerick city last week as part of a worldwide campaign to stamp out tax dodging at home and abroad.

The bus, which has already spent several weeks travelling throughout the UK, reached Dublin on Thursday, before travelling to Limerick to explain to the public how tax dodging is impacting communities in Ireland as well as developing countries.

Members of the public were encouraged to visit the bus to view an exhibition of case studies and information.

Education campaign co-ordinator for Christian Aid David Thomas said: “We want to raise awareness of Christian Aids tax justice campaign and we are trying to raise awareness that poor countries are losing out on $160 billion dollars every single year as a result of tax dodging by some unscrupulous multinationals”.

“We are calling for greater transparency on the way these multinationals have to report on their profits and taxes,” he added.

“We choose to come to Limerick as we have a strong base of support for Christian Aid amongst the churches here and we have gotten a great reaction here so far in the city. I think a big red bus passing through the city grabs the public’s attention and we have had a lot of people videoing the bus and taking pictures which is what we want as it raises awareness,” he added.

The bus tour also coincides with the publication of a report for Christian Aid titled Tax Injustice: Following the Tax Trail, examining in detail the social, economic and environmental consequences of property tax breaks.
