THIS Saturday, anyone with an eye for a good photograph is being invited to come to Adare for the Fifth Annual Worldwide Photo Walk.

The Adare event is being organised by professional photographer Stephen Power and is one of just two such events taking place in Ireland. However, anyone who comes along will be in good company with over a quarter of a million people expected to take part in some 1500 events world-wide.

It’s being billed as the world’s largest social photography event in the history of photography, explains Mr Power.

However, his primary aim is to encourage as many people as possible with an interest in photography to join in. “It is a social event, a chance to ask questions about photography and to do something photographic in an organized way,” he says.

Stressing that the event is totally free, he is also keen to stress that it is suitable for beginners as well as for more advanced photographers. It is not about what kind of camera you have, he emphasizes. Bring it along – even if it is a disposable one.

The Adare Photo Walk begins at 2pm, gathering at the Village Hall before doing a circuit of the village. After the walk, there will be a coming together in one of the local pubs where people can show others their photographs and have a relaxed chat and informal discussion.

Stephen Power will then select the day’s best photo, the taker of which will receive Scott Kelby’s number one bestseller on digital photograpy. This photograph, and possibly others of high quality, will go on to compete worldwide for a range of lucrative prizes.

The Worldwide Photo Walk is now in its fifth year and is organized globally through the National Association of Photoshop Professionals of which Scott Kelby is the president.

Stephen Power, whose book Traditional Notes: a celebration of Irish music and musicians, published by Liffey Press is currently on sale in local bookshops, is a past recipient of the NAPP “guru” award.
