Annual flower show in Newcastle West to be a blooming success

THE FACT that we are in the thick of one of the wettest summers on record will not dampen the enthusiasm at this year’s Newcastle West Flower Show, which takes place next week.

Hundreds of entries from growers right across Munster will be flooding into the Newcastle West Community Centre from this Saturday ahead of the official judging next Wednesday.

Hannah Mortell, a member of the flower show organising committee, said that they are expecting that the weather will have an impact on entries.

“I’d say the flowers will suffer a bit after it. Sure the flowers are nearly all rotting in the ground, and the veg will suffer too. But we find that things sort of balance out. If we’re down with the flowers one year, we might be up with the paintings and crafts.

“We’re still waiting for most of the entries to come in. They usually don’t start coming in until the last minute.”

As well as the typical categories of cut flowers, pot plants, flower arranging and vegetable growing, entries will be judged in fields as diverse as cake baking to photography. A total of 25 trophies and a prize pot of €2,000 will be up for grabs.

The show will be open to visitors from 8pm on Tuesday and from 9.30am to 11.30am on Wednesday. Official judging will take place on Wednesday afternoon, with the prize giving to winners taking place at 9pm on Thursday.
