MORE than 300 people across Limerick donated over €15,000 worth of gifts to a Christmas toy appeal to help some of the city’s least fortunate.

Social inclusion charity Novas Initiatives, based in Mungret Street, once again organised the appeal, with members of the public asked to donate toys and food to needy families across the city.

And Limerick’s generous public responded in their droves, with this year’s toy appeal the most successful in recent years.

Head of homeless services at the charity Anne Cronin said they were “astounded” not just by the number of people who donated, but the value of the presents given.

“Gifts worth far more than our recommended spending were donated, resulting in a lot of very happy children on Christmas morning. The public have helped us provide toys for over three hundred children this Christmas, many of whom would not have received anything had it not been for the generosity of gifts. We estimate that at least €15,000 worth of toys were donated this year,” she said.

The few toys left over, Anne added, are to be donated by Novas to the Children’s Ark charity in the Limerick Regional Hospital.

Novas Initiatives is funded through the HSE, who helped distribute the presents on Christmas Day.

Anne paid tribute to Tony Quilty of the HSE for his support and help during the appeal.
